Jose Peseiro's Plan to Play Possessional 3-4-3 Formation At AFCON 2023 - will It Work  with the Current Quality of Players in  Super Eagles? 

Possessional football is an eye catching style, often referred to as champagne football. It requires players that are strong on the ball and can mark very well for quick recovery. 

The philosophy itself is based on the fact that as long as your team is in possession of the ball, your opponent cannot execute their plan. 

You require players who can hold and give accurate passes between opponents; expectional midfielders who can dictate the pace of the game. It requires fast and high stamina wing backs that can run back and front in successions without gasing out. 

It requires high pressing attackers that can force opponents to retreat most of the time. 

The 3-4-3 is deficient at the back with only three central defenders, they can easily be exposed when opponent has some fast and intelligent wingers. 

Reacting to the idea of introducing the formation as the team prepare for the AFCON 2023, Udeze said the Eagles don’t have the players to utilize it.

“I think he should discard the idea of introducing the 3-4-3 formation in the Super Eagles because for you to operate the formation, your wingbacks must be fast. Unfortunately our wingbacks are not fast and also not comfortable on the ball,” he said on Brila FM.

Another issue with the formation is the two central midfielders. While the midfielder, who will be the standing one, must be very strong the other midfielder must be someone who must be going forward and falling back to defend.

“So for me this 3-4-3 formation will expose the Super Eagles so Peseiro must do away with this idea.“

Also reacting to the new formation, Coach Jerry said, it will be suicidal to play 3-4-3 because we do not have a strong and authoritative central defenders. It will expose the goalkeeper too much. Off course, we all know that we don't have such a high quality goalkeeper now. I suggest we play a more conservative formation to protect our defence line. Super Eagles playing style may not be exciting to watch, but Nigeria is more likely to go far if the team play 4-5-1 formation
